BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - One of Vermont’s most visible state-owned historic sites is open for the season.

The Bennington Battle Monument - a 306-foot (93-meter) monument located in the town of Bennington - opened on May 1.

The monument commemorates the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington fought on Aug. 16, 1777, when colonial soldiers were protecting a military storehouse located when the monument now stands.

The battle itself was fought nearby in Hoosick Falls, New York.

The monument contains exhibits that tell the story of the battle and the construction of the landmark.
