OPINION:
The great “gray bard,” poet Walt Whitman, would have turned 200 today. As someone who greatly admires the work of Whitman, I have had many conversations over the years with people who simply do not favor him as much as I do.
Too many things are named after Whitman: Too many high schools, bridges, buildings. Whitman is buried in my hometown of Camden, New Jersey. It is our town’s honor. We even have a Little League baseball team named after him. And if Whitman were alive today, I would imagine that he would journal about the team, just as he wrote about the youngsters diving in the river in New York City’s harbor.
