BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut university has cut ties with the Unification Church, which saved the school from financial ruin decades ago.
The board of the University of Bridgeport voted unanimously to remove references to the church and its subsidiaries from the school’s bylaws.
The Connecticut Post in a story published Tuesday reports the church has given at least $113 million to the university since 1992.
In exchange, the church approved the majority of trustees, among other provisions.
The relationship was controversial because many considered the church, founded by the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon, to be a cult.
A church official in an email said the organization was proud to have been able to help.
The church hasn’t gifted funds to the school in at least a decade and few church trustees remain.
