While President Trump’s visit to Japan featured a meeting with the new emperor, the most important result of the trip was his meeting with Prime Minister Abe (“Trump gets red carpet treatment as first head of state to meet Japan’s new emperor,” Web, May 26).

The meeting with Mr. Abe showed a stark difference in the two men’s views on North Korea. While Trump was not concerned by the recent testing by North Korea’s Kim of a short-range missile, Mr. Abe believed this action was problematic. Mr. Trump knows that a short-range missile presents no danger to the United States, but Japan, being well within the range of the tested missile, understandably has concerns.

Upon further examination, the United States should be troubled by the test as we have troops in both Japan and South Korea. Mr. Trump’s apparent trust in Mr. Kim is misplaced based on the past and present behavior of that dictator.
