BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The founders of an arts group in southwestern Vermont are seeking to annul a 2017 gift to Southern Vermont College in Bennington, which is closing its doors this summer due to insurmountable financial challenges.
The founders of the Bennington Center for the Arts have sued to annul their gift.
At the time of the gift by Bruce Laumeister and his wife, Elizabeth Small, college officials said the school would continue to operate the performance and gallery space as part of the Southern Vermont College curriculum.
The Bennington Banner reports the suit is the second that seeks to prevent the college trustees from selling off the 371-acre campus and its buildings to help cover mounting debt.
