WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - The state and the town of Westerly are teaming up to address the trash problem at Misquamicut State Beach.
WJAR-TV reports that the town has loaned the state two solar-powered compacting trash cans - one for garbage, the other for recycling.
Caswell Cooke, a town councilor and executive director of the Misquamicut Business Association, says they fit a lot more trash than a normal trash can and when they need to be emptied they emit a signal.
The state Department of Environmental Management has spent more than $100,000 to try to get beach the trash under control, including hiring four summer employees to pick up garbage.
The state has added more trash receptacles near beach entrances and in parking lots.
People caught littering can be fined up to $500.
