BERLIN, N.H. (AP) - Some residents jumped from a burning house in New Hampshire on Tuesday as fire engulfed the three-story building and collapsed part of the roof.
Redondo Dore, who lives on the third floor, told WMUR-TV that his girlfriend woke him up about 4 a.m.
“I smelled the smoke,” he said. “I go out to look out my right window, and I saw there was a yellow light coming from there. I looked and saw the smoke.”
He said their exit was blocked by the smoke. “Our best option, we realized, was to jump out the window,” he said.
He said his girlfriend jumped first and hit a balcony on the way down. Her mother said she suffered broken bones. She was taken to a hospital. Other residents were treated for smoke inhalation.
The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire. The Berlin Fire Department says it started at about 3:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they saw the back porch was burning. Part of the roof collapsed. The fire was under control by midmorning.
There were three apartment units. It wasn’t immediately known how many people lived in the units or had escaped. No firefighters were hurt.
There was no immediate word on a possible cause.
