HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - Authorities in Connecticut say an elderly man has died after his mobility scooter was hit by a car.

Hamden police say the fatal accident happened early Sunday afternoon as 74-year-old Robert Sheard was crossing the street near the Miller Memorial Library.

They say Sheard was not using a crosswalk when he was struck by a car driven by an unidentified 69-year-old Middletown resident. The driver hasn’t been cited.

Police said Monday that an off-duty Connecticut State Police trooper happened upon the scene immediately after the crash and provided medical help until paramedics arrived. Sheard was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he later died.

Hamden police continue to investigate.
