MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Wesleyan University is celebrating the school’s 187th commencement.

The school plans to confer 763 bachelor degrees, 26 masters degrees and 11 doctor of philosophy degrees during Sunday’s ceremony in Middletown.

The commencement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the school’s founding of an African-American Studies program.



The keynote speaker during graduation will be Saidiya Hartman, a 1984 alumna who has authored several books, including “Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth-Century America,” and “Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route.”
