Sen. Kamala D. Harris said Wednesday the “process” to determine whether President Trump should be impeached should begin, as she and other 2020 Democratic presidential contenders try to navigate an issue that is splitting the party.
“I believe the process should begin to do an investigation to determine, ultimately, whether impeachment should happen,” Ms. Harris of California said on CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
“But the reality also is that at the end of this, the Senate probably will not vote to [convict] him, which means he’ll probably prance around and say ’witch hunt, witch hunt — they went after me and they didn’t get me,’” she said. “And so we have to just also balance, right — this is a reality.”
The comments echoed those Ms. Harris made at a town hall last month when she said Congress should take steps toward impeachment, and come as the crowded Democratic field is split on the issue.
Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas said this week that Congress should start impeachment proceedings, after Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts had already made such a call. Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont said Wednesday on CNN that “it may well be time” for an impeachment inquiry to begin.
But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tried to fend off such calls from her left flank, as some Democrats worry that going through the process could ultimately help Mr. Trump politically.
