WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A former police chief in Delaware has been sentenced to probation after crashing his car into another vehicle in the police department parking lot and trying to cover it up.
Former Newport police chief Michael Capriglione was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty in February to official misconduct, a misdemeanor, and careless driving.
Capriglione was sentenced to one year probation and ordered to surrender his police certification. A second year of probation will be discharged once he pays a $75 fine and $8,639.07 restitution to the town.
Authorities say that after hitting the other car with his departmental vehicle, Capriglione ordered that surveillance video that showed the incident be deleted.
Capriglione was charged with inattentive driving, failing to report the incident, official misconduct and tampering with physical evidence, a felony.
