PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Volunteers pulled tires, beer bottles and parts of barbecue grills out of a river in south Mississippi during a recent community service day.
The Mississippi Press reports the Pascagoula River cleanup took place Friday.
About 50 people collected 8 tons (7.3 metric tons) of trash. That is an increase from the estimated 6 tons (5.4 metric tons) collected last year.
Among the items retrieved this year were two refrigerators and pieces of damaged piers.
The river’s marsh islands were also littered with beer bottles, plastic foam ice chests and the frame of a portable shade structure.
