WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A charter school in Delaware has been placed under formal review by the state Department of Education after parents raised concerns about the school’s governance and financial dealings.
The News Journal reports that Education Secretary Susan Bunting outlined six violations in a letter to Odyssey’s school board president. Bunting said there has been a history of conflicts of interest, misappropriated funds and other problems.
An investigation will be conducted by the Charter School Accountability Committee to determine whether the school is violating the terms of its charter and whether to order remedial measures.
The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association helped form the school in 2006 in hopes of creating a space for the area’s Greek American community.
Bunting’s letter said the association’s members hold five of the nine school board positions, creating a conflict of interest with the fraternal organization.
