SANTA YNEZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a pilot has been killed after a small plane crashed in the Southern California mountains.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office says the wreckage of the single-engine Aviat plane was spotted early Thursday in a remote area.

Crews hiked a steep ridgeline near Figueroa Mountain and found the wreckage and the pilot’s body.

He’s identified as 68-year-old Pierre Josefsohn of nearby Solvang.

Officials say the pilot’s family called authorities late Wednesday after he failed to return from a day flight around the region west of Los Angeles.

Josefsohn was described as an experienced pilot.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
