PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A driver has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed two people and injured five others in northeast Philadelphia last month.

City police say 25-year-old Shekhroz Mamaatkulov faces counts of involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and aggravated assault by vehicle stemming from the April 21 accident.

He allegedly was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with an SUV and another vehicle. Those two vehicles then struck three others.

Fifty-year-old Juan Rivera, who was driving the SUV, and his 48-year-old passenger, Carmen Ruiz, were killed in the crash. Relatives have said the pair were headed home after attending a family birthday party

Authorities say Mamaatkulov was found at a hospital in Camden, New Jersey and was arrested Tuesday. It’s not clear if he was injured in the crash or if he has retained an attorney.
