BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation says recent frigid temperatures has raised concern for ice jams when the weather warms up.
The Billings Gazette reports that the agency advises residents near water to purchase flood insurance soon and have an emergency plan in place in case of quick flooding that requires evacuation.
The National Weather Service says Montana is particularly prone to dangerous ice jams with the highest number of reported ice jams and ice jam-related deaths in the lower 48 states.
Across Montana some waterways have already begun to jam.
KC Williams of Yellowstone County Disaster and Emergency Services says his agency is already starting to prepare and monitor Yellowstone County for ice jams, as they can be dangerous and damaging, causing flash flooding and erosion.
