ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) - A wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2016 hazing-related death of a Ferrum College student was settled last year.
The Roanoke Times reported Saturday that the $25 million lawsuit filed by Michael Antony Walker’s mother was settled in July for $544,000.
Walker was a freshman when he was found unconscious in April 2016 at an off-campus party held by Sigma Alpha Kappa, which Walker had pledged. He was hospitalized and pronounced dead eight days layer.
The bulk of the settlement was paid by six fraternity brothers, who were insured under policies of liability insurance issued to their parents. Three were given jail time up to 30 days.
Plaintiff’s attorney Paul Thomson said he was prohibited from commenting on the case. Ferrum College declined to comment to the newspaper.
