STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) - Two people are dead following a crash blamed on a wrong-way driver on a Connecticut highway.
Police say the crash occurred around 6:15 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 95 in Stonington.
The New Haven Register reports a car driven by 55-year-old Melvin Wells was traveling southbound when it collided head-on with a vehicle heading in the wrong direction on the highway. Both drivers were killed.
Wells was a former football coach at East Haven High School. The school said on Facebook that Wells, who also coached at a magnet school in New Haven, had a “profound impact” on many student-athletes during his tenure.
Police identified the driver of the other vehicle as 32-year-old Larry Stallings, of Bristol. A passenger in Stallings’ vehicle suffered serious injuries.
