Sen. Ted Cruz spoke out against a “barbaric” Brunei law being enacted next week punishing homosexual sex with death by stoning.

The law in the majority-Muslim southeast Asian kingdom will go into effect April 3.

Mr. Cruz’s response is notable, as The Texas Republican has rarely spoken favorably on the subject of LGBTQ rights.

In the past, the senator has said he supports only heterosexual marriage, referred to by him as “traditional marriage.”

Mr. Cruz pushed bills allowing states to decide individually on same-sex marriage  and condemned the Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized gay marriage.

He also supported former Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis, who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
