EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - A smoke condition at a northern New Jersey school has spurred the safe evacuation of all students and staff.

Authorities say smoke coming from the ceiling and possibly originating from an exhaust fan at the Alfred S. Faust Intermediate School in East Rutherford prompted the evacuation around 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Officials initially said the smoke was caused by a fire, but later determined that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t immediately clear how much damage the smoke condition caused.

All students were evacuated from the smoky school and taken to nearby Becton Regional High School and eventually were dismissed early.

Officials say the intermediate school will reopen Tuesday.
