DERBY, Conn. (AP) - A former Connecticut teacher charged with failing to report a high school student’s sexual assault allegations has applied for a probation program that could lead to the charge being dropped.
The Connecticut Post reports that the lawyer for 48-year-old Jeffrey Giovacchino on Thursday submitted several letters from former students and parents to a judge in support of his application.
Giovacchino is seeking accelerated rehabilitation, a form of unsupervised probation meant for first-time offenders facing non-serious offenses.
Prosecutors say the former Oxford High School history teacher and volleyball coach did not report to law enforcement or child welfare officials as required by law that a student told him she was sexually assaulted at a party in 2016.
His attorney says “there was no nefarious intent.”
