WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A north-central Kansas woman has admitted in court to mailing a faked modified will of a Kansas banker that would have given her half of his $20 million estate.
The Wichita Eagle reports that 66-year-old Wanda Oborny, of Hays, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of mail fraud. She had originally been charged with seven counts.
Federal prosecutors say in a news release that they will recommend Oborny serve probation and donate money to Fort Hays State University, which is where banker Earl Field bequeathed the vast majority of his estate.
Prosecutors say Oborny, who had been Field’s part-time bookkeeper, claimed to have found the modified will leaving her half his estate in his desk the night he died in 2013. Investigators determined it was forged.
Oborny is set to be sentenced May 29.
