A 40-year-old illegal immigrant Mexican man caught by the U.S. border on Sunday died at a hospital in El Paso, Texas, the Border Patrol announced Tuesday.
The man, who was not named by authorities, showed signs of illness when he was being processed by agents, and he was taken to Las Palmas Medical Center where he was diagnosed with liver and renal failure and flu-like symptoms.
He died later Sunday.
The man’s death follows that of two children who died in December after the difficult journey through Mexico.
Those deaths spurred Customs and Border Protection to create new medical screening procedures to quickly evaluate every migrant encountered at the border.
More than 50 migrants a day are now being sent for immediate medical care, authorities say.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and his loved ones,” Andrew Meehan, a spokesman for CBP, said in a statement announcing the latest death.
He said a review is underway.
