BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Agency of Transportation says it has gone over its allocated winter salt budget as the state faced a series of snowstorms and freeze-thaw conditions.
WCAX-TV reports crews used about 190,000 tons of salt on state roads this year, compared to the average winter use of 140,000 tons.
VTrans says the increase has pushed them $2.5 million over their budget for salt to a total of $14.5 million.
VTrans spokesman Todd Law says the agency faced a 15 percent increase in salt prices this year, from an average of $68 to $78 a ton.
The agency says it is working with its financial team to ensure the total maintenance fund isn’t over budget.
