NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - Firefighters say two people have suffered serious burns in an apartment fire in Vermont.

WCAX-TV reports one of the victims woke up to the sound and smell of flames Wednesday morning at the apartment in Newfane. The fire started on the first floor and spread to the second floor.

The two were taken to a hospital burn unit in Boston.

Officials said the fire could have had something to do with smoking materials left in the area.

They estimate the damage at $25,000.
