WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A mental health provider in Delaware says a ransomware attack locked the organization out of records for tens of thousands of patients.
The News Journal reports that Delaware Guidance Services for Children and Youth Executive Director Jill Rogers says the Christmas Day attack encrypted data on the nonprofit’s servers, making it inaccessible to staff. The organization paid a ransom of thousands of dollars to obtain a de-encryption “key” to unlock the records.
Rogers says the attack affected about 10 years of records involving about 20,000 patients. According to a Feb. 26 letter to patients, the personal information in the records included names, birthdates, social security numbers and medical information.
Rogers says an information technology firm the nonprofit hired found no sign that attackers viewed or used any records.
