MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Heavy snowfall across central and southern Minnesota created hazardous driving conditions, and shut down northbound lanes of Interstate 35W north of the metro area.
The highway closed Friday afternoon near Circle Pines due to about 40 crashes and spinouts. It reopened a couple hours later.
Dozens of vehicles were reported to be in ditches in Wyoming, as buses were delayed during the Friday evening commute.
The state Department of Transportation said roads were in poor condition across much of the state.
The Star Tribune reports that by 5 p.m., some parts of the state had seen more than 5 inches of snow.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for a large area of southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin until midnight. The snow will be followed by extremely cold weekend weather, the National Weather Service said.
