PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island lawmakers are considering legislation that would give the University of Rhode Island its own trustee board.
Currently the six-member Council on Post-Secondary Education oversees all three of the state’s universities: URI, Rhode Island College and Community College of Rhode Island.
The Providence Journal reports the proposed URI board would have 17 trustees.
URI President David Dooley says the school’s growing national and international prominence necessitates a responsive board that thinks about finances, enrollment and research opportunities on a multi-year basis.
He says the board would enhance fundraising capabilities and include people particularly passionate about the school’s future.
Gov. Gina Raimondo says the bill is complicated with dramatic implications for the state’s higher education system. She says it should not be rushed through late in the legislative session.
