WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A federal judge in Delaware has sentenced a former Maryland doctor to 2½ years in prison in a financial crimes case.

Zahid Aslam of Elkton was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty last year to one count of making a false statement to a financial institution. Prosecutors agreed to drop two similar counts, as well as a conspiracy charge.

The 46-year-old Aslam was an OB-GYN who also had medical practices in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Prosecutors say he entered into an illegal scheme with a former loan officer at Citibank and WSFS and recruited two associates to apply for loans for which Aslam knew he would not qualify.

Aslam and two of his health care entities entered into a separate $3 million civil settlement regarding improper Medicaid and Medicare billings.
