The Dalai Lama said President Trump’s time in the White House has been defined by a “lack of moral principle,” the spiritual leader told the BBC in an interview released on Thursday.
“When he became president, he expressed America first. That is wrong,” the Dalai Lama said.
The Dalai Lama’s statement is a deviation from 2016 when he said Mr. Trump’s presidency left him with “no worries.”
He cited the U.S.’ withdrawal from the Paris climate accord and the immigration crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border as the two biggest concerns.
“When I saw pictures of some of those young children, I was sad. America … should take a global responsibility,” the Dalai Lama said.
He said Mr. Trump has not requested a meeting, but he did praise Vice President Mike Pence’s support of Tibetan citizens, as well as the multiple congressional members he’s met throughout the years.
