PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence School Board is expected to appoint a new acting superintendent.
Board President Nicholas Hemond told the Providence Journal that Dorothy Smith, a veteran administrator with the district, will be named the acting superintendent at Wednesday’s meeting.
Smith is currently the executive director for elementary education.
Her tenure in the position is short-term while the school board searches for a successor for Superintendent Christopher Maher, who unexpectedly announced he was stepping down earlier this year. His last day is Friday.
The news of Smith’s appointment coincides with a highly anticipated report on the city’s public schools. WPRI-TV says the report is expected to document the high levels of dysfunction and failure within the system.
The report is set to be released Tuesday night.
