KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Some students receiving college assistance through the Tennessee Promise program will now have access to extra aid and mentoring.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports Knox Promise is a pilot program that aims to increase the number of Knox County college graduates.

Through the program, eligible students can receive need-based grants to pay for unexpected financial burdens. They will also receive a textbook stipend and a coach to support them until they earn a college degree or credential. Some students will also have access to a summer support program.

Knox Promise will be available for Tennessee Promise-eligible students from the 2019 and 2020 Knox County high school graduating classes.

It is funded by a $6.2 million grant from the Haslam Family Foundation.
