FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - Firefighters in Connecticut say two toddlers escaped serious injury when a metal spike propelled into the air by a lawn mower smashed through a back door window of their sport-utility vehicle.
Fairfield officials say the children, ages 2 and 3, were strapped into child car seats in the back seat Saturday when the 10-inch spike crashed through the window and passed within inches of their faces. Authorities say the spike hit the glass on the other side of the vehicle and landed between the children.
Officials say it was “good fortune” the toddlers suffered only minor injuries from the shattered glass.
Firefighters say a landscaper was using a commercial lawn mower that ran over the spike and sent it flying 20 feet into the SUV.
No charges were filed.
