SALUDA, N.C. (AP) - Almost 80 acres of property in western North Carolina once eyed as a firing gun range for a sheriff’s office is now a natural protected area.
The Hendersonville Times-News reports that Conserving Carolina purchased the 78 acres of forested land in Saluda last month. It hopes to add the property to the Green River Game Lands, which the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission manages.
In the spring of 2018, Henderson County officials considered developing the area into an outdoor firing range. The county dropped the plan after hearing from residents who opposed it.
Conserving Carolina has applied for a grant from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund to cover most of the $450,000 purchase. Local donors contributed nearly $83,000, enough to secure matching funds for the grant.
