ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - A firefighter who died during a training exercise in Alabama has been identified.
News outlets report 35-year-old Jared Wayne Echols died Monday in Anniston. Springville Fire Chief Richard Harvey says Echols was a volunteer firefighter who was working to become certified for full-time employment.
Harvey says Echols was about 20 minutes into the training exercise when he stopped to go to a rehab station for medical assistance. He was later pronounced dead.
Harvey says there was not an accident during the exercise, and Echols’ death appeared to be a medical incident.
Echols had been a volunteer firefighter with the Springville Fire Department since January. He leaves behind a wife and two children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
