LOWVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - A prom in northern New York was relocated at the last minute after a student’s social media acquaintance threatened to “shoot up” the prom.
The threat occurred shortly before the Lowville Academy prom was to start Saturday evening.
Parents and school officials acted quickly to move decorations from a cafe at a local ski resort to the school’s gym and to arrange food and tables.
District superintendent Cheryl Steckly told WWNY-TV that officials could better control who was coming and going at the school gym.
Lewis County sheriff’s deputies, Lowville village police, state police and emergency medical personnel were on hand at the school.
District officials don’t believe the person who made the threats was from Lowville or had a connection to the school district.
