PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Rhode Island has dropped another 4 cents in the past week.

AAA Northeast reports Monday that self-serve, regular is now selling for an average of $2.72 per gallon, which is 4 cents higher than the national average but 21 cents lower than the Rhode Island price a year ago.

A AAA spokesman says a decline in prices at this time of year is unusual, because higher demand in the summer usually drives prices up, but this year growing gasoline inventories are contributing to relief at the pump.

AAA found self-serve, regular selling for as low as $2.58 per gallon and as high as $2.88.
