SANDY HOOK, N.J. (AP) - In a story June 14 about a concert series being canceled because of nesting birds at New Jersey’s Gateway National Recreation Area, The Associated Press reported erroneously that regulations prohibit any activity within 1,000 meters of the bird’s nests. Federal wildlife officials say the buffer was a recommendation they made to the beach manager, not a prohibition, and that it applied specifically to the planned concerts.

SANDY HOOK, N.J. (AP) - Officials have canceled the summer concert series at New Jersey’s Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook because of nesting birds.
Park officials say 20 Piping Plover nests were found along the park’s beaches. The shorebirds are a threatened and federally-protected species .
Guidance provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended that the beach manager adopt a 1,000-foot buffer for the concerts.
Officials say noise scares the birds and the Sandy Hook Foundation could not find another spot to move the concert series.
The birds build nests, lay their eggs and move on after several months.
