It speaks volumes about our nation’s misplaced priorities that we’ve spent $60 billion on Iraq’s infrastructure reconstruction and $100 billion on Afghanistan’s infrastructure reconstruction — more than what was spent on post-World-War-II reconstruction of Germany ($35 billion in today’s dollars). Yet here in America we have no such a plan in place to rebuild our own infrastructure.

Our continued inattention to modernization of our own infrastructure and ports — and our nation’s vulnerability to massive weather-related disasters due to climate change — threaten our entire economy as a world power as well as our national security. The time for name-calling and tweeting is over. This matter requires leadership on the part of the president and bipartisan legislation in Congress under the direction of the Senate majority leader together with the speaker of the House. If it requires raising taxes a little bit on all of us based on our income, so be it.
