In “Deleting history, forgetting the past” (Web, July 8), Richard Rahn makes the point that those who lived in a specific time in the past were products of that time period.

Change in society mostly occurs slowly for the same reason genetic mutation does. There are usually only one or two occurrences that happen and, if they catch on, additional occurrences follow and have something to build upon.

Those who are contemptuous of forebears who thought differently probably neither know history nor understand why people thought differently back then. The removal of statues and monuments in the past few years is no different from the Taliban in Afghanistan destroying historic mountainside statues when they took over. This was looked upon with contempt by the world, yet some of these same people directed the removal of historical statues here in the U.S.

Looking forward, do these same people have any idea how they will be looked upon through the lens of self-serving history, for creating such huge national debt? This debt may cause tremendous hardship for future generations.

History is written by the survivors but caused by their predecessors. We are all predecessors of future survivors. How will they see us?
