SUMMERVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A north Georgia school district that has been on a four-day week for nearly a decade is switching back to a five-day week for the 2019-20 school year.
Chattooga County cut back to a four-day school week in 2010 to save money. Students didn’t have to go to school on Monday and spent longer hours in class under the four-day schedule.
WSB-TV reports the change to a Monday through Friday schedule is effective Thursday, Aug. 1.
The school board voted 4-1 in January to abandon the Tuesday through Friday schedule. Board members cited poor test scores and said students needed to spend an extra day in class.
Every year, the school board will hold a public hearing to see if the five-day calendar is working in students’ best interest.
