SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - A state loan and grant will help Lake Superior State University build a center for research and education about upper Great Lakes ecosystems.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy said it’s providing $1.5 million in Brownfield Redevelopment Grant and Loan funds to clean up a former manufacturing site in Sault Ste. Marie. The money will be used to deal with environmental contamination and demolition of a parking lot on the former Union Carbide site.
State officials say the Center for Freshwater Research and Education is expected to boost school enrollment, business and recreation in the area. Students in the facility will study fisheries, invasive species and water quality.
