President Trump will travel to Williamsburg and Jamestown, Virginia, on Tuesday to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of American democracy, the White House confirmed Friday.

The celebration will honor the 400th anniversary of the opening of the first representative legislative assembly, Virginia’s House of Burgesses.

The president will give a speech, a White House official told the Times-Dispatch of Richmond.

Many state Democratic elected officials have said they intend to boycott the event if the president attends. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney resigned from the event’s planning committee when Mr. Trump was invited.
