SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (AP) - A bridge that connects two New Jersey shore towns has finally reopened, nearly a year after it was closed for renovation work.

Cape May County officials say the Townsends Inlet Bridge reopened to traffic at 6 p.m. Thursday. They say toll collections will be suspended until 6 a.m. Monday.

The 1,373-foot bridge connects Avalon and Sea Isle City. It had been closed in September 2018 so crews could replace seven of the 27 spans on the Avalon side, along with adding new piling, pier caps, a concrete deck and a railing system.

The $8.6 million project was initially expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. But officials announced in March that “unforeseen conditions” made that timeframe untenable.

Residents and business owners had criticized the delays in completing the work.
