PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The first building to officially open on the 20-acre plot of land in Providence made vacant by the relocation of Interstate 195 has been dedicated.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo cut the ribbon Wednesday on the Wexford Innovation Center.

Raimondo says the 196,000-square-foot building is expected to be a “beehive of innovation” and boost the state economy.

Brown University; the Cambridge Innovation Center, a Boston-based company that offers workspace for entrepreneurs and startups; and health care company Johnson & Johnson are the anchor tenants.

The total cost of the seven-story Innovation Center is approximately $88 million. The project will receive $18.8 million in incentives from the 195 Redevelopment Fund and $15 million in Rebuild Rhode Island tax credits.

A hotel, supermarket and residential units are expected to be built nearby.
