TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) - A former middle school principal who filed a federal lawsuit claiming retaliatory termination has been granted $140,000 as part of a settlement deal.
Valerie Bruneau had claimed in her 2018 lawsuit that she was dismissed from her job at Torrington Middle School in 2017 because she’d advocated for special education students.
But the settlement stopped short of providing the total $841,295 in damages she originally sought. The Republican-American reports the amount is roughly equal to her $139,000 annual salary.
Bruneau’s attorney Andrew Feinstein says the Torrington Board of Education “engaged in purposeful and systematic pattern of discrimination.” He also says the board aided in neglect against special education students.
Lawyers for the board didn’t respond to emails seeking comment late Tuesday.
