DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) - Nokian Tyres has produced its first test tire at its factory in Tennessee, as the company approaches the facility’s planned start date in early 2020 of producing tires for commercial sales.

The company says the Dayton, Tennessee factory will bolster Nokian Tyres’ strategy to double sales in North America by 2023.

Nokian Tyres says the factory represents a $360 million investment and currently employs 70 people. The number of employees is expected to rise to about 400 once the factory’s annual capacity reaches 4 million tires in 2023.

The facility will keep making tires for testing and machine calibration between now and the end of the year.

Former Gov. Bill Haslam announced in May 2017 that the Finland-based company would open a Tennessee factory.
