ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - At least 11 cases of a gastrointestinal illness have been confirmed in New York’s capital region.
The Albany Times-Union reports that cyclosporiasis (SY’cloh-spor-EYE’-a-sis) outbreaks are often associated with imported fresh produce that’s been contaminated with a fecal parasite.
State health officials say patients’ symptoms began around mid-June. A few of them reported eating at a community center, a senior center or a private college buffet in the area.
Officials say there’s no indication the outbreak is the result of poor food handling or preparation as contamination often occurs before food arrives at distribution centers and businesses. The parasite isn’t easily removed with standard rinsing.
Officials say the establishments are cooperating and more may be identified.
