There has been a long-standing tradition of outstanding athletic teams receiving invitations to the White House. For some time now we have seen numerous big-mouthed individuals refuse their invitations. They have every right not to go, but they don’t have a right to turn their feelings into a foul controversy (“Megan Rapinoe: Team will reject White House invite; we don’t want message ’co-opted or corrupted,’” Web, July 10).

The appropriate response is to politely find a reason to simply be a no-show and keep the reason to yourself. The current generation of me-first delinquents doesn’t understand this. It’s unfortunate that a true minority of undignified people feel it necessary to ruin a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the majority.

I encourage President Trump to close the door to such invitations and lay the blame squarely on the challenged few who wish to turn celebration into controversy. They don’t deserve recognition.
