OPINION:
I couldn’t help but laugh while reading “Nancy Pelosi: Trump citizenship question is attempt to ’make America white again’” (Web, July 8). Mrs. Pelosi may be correct that what President Trump is doing will result in “certain populations” not answering the form — but if said populations were composed of legal immigrants they most likely would answer.
While Mrs. Pelosi and her party seem to want the United States to allow anyone who shows up at the border immediate entrance to America, why do they then not believe we should ask, on our census, who is a citizen? The last time I read our Constitution, every part I read (Article 14, section 2 and Articles 15, 19, 24 and 26) that discussed voting clearly stated that voting was for “citizens” of the country. Immigrants, legal or not, could not vote unless they became naturalized citizens.
While Mrs. Pelosi is accusing Mr. Trump of trying to “make America white again,” she and her people are trying to evade the basics of the U.S. Constitution by denying that we should know how many of the people who live here who are actually citizens. It is the pot calling the kettle black.
